So we're a couple months from AF Vol 3. Gentry becomes the Canadian Minister of Defence. He adds new funding for Alpha Flight. Because it's Canada, they are desperate for additional funding, so they are also incorporated with a couple sponsors, Roots being one, who recommend providing the team jackets/shirts/hats. (Not unlike the Olympic Team. It's the little things like this were missing from the other series). Dept H is dismantled and becomes "Alpha Flight". The team is renamed "The Flight" or something, separated into different teams. Alpha Team, Beta Team, Gamma Team and Omega Team. Each member has the Greek symbol of their respective team somewhere on their uniforms.
James Hudson become Director of Alpha Flight. He pretty much takes over Gentry's job of Vol 2. Getting info and informing the team. He calls as many former Alpha members as possible for a meeting. He invites each one to re-join the team, earning a salary and providing room and board to whoever wants it.
The first issue starts with James talking at the meeting, informing the team as to the previous news...and forgiving for the lack of seats, as it is government funded. Then it shows the group sitting in class-like desks and several members standing in the back without a place to sit. (The ones standing are strategically picked for foreshadowing later). MML looks back then stands, giving up his seat to one of the other members. Also Sasquatch is sitting there with his arms crossed and a broken desk under him.
Hudson informs the members, if they are interested, of the new team groupings. Alpha team (which will handle mainly mystic challenges) will be comprised of mostly original members. Sasquatch, Shaman, Judd, Puck 2, Snowbird, Northstar, Earthmover, Yukon Jack, then congratulates MML as becoming the new Guardian and interim Leader of this group (pending his success in the role). He passes him a replica of his gloves, boots and Guardian mask. (He's become a little less "wonder bread" since dealing with his parental problems).
Beta team will be having the most members. Their role will be more of a "bing bang boom" strike force to overtake whatever enemy they are up against. They are comprised of Persuasion, Goblyn, Manikin, Ghost (Ghost Girl), Pathway, Murmur(who hasn't been very effective in the past, so she has been training in hand to hand combat, Archery and has a costume with a "Spider-Man/Cat Woman-like" ability to stick to walls for sneaking up on prey), Windshear and lead by Flex (also in an interim basis). Flex has grown a couple years and in that time become a lot more comfortable with his powers and himself. Though he's on the verge of becoming cocky, not unlike his late brother (which Puck is well aware of and warns him of every chance he gets).
Gamma is still the training team. "Tryouts". (I was thinking even a reality show like "making the cut" could be filmed at one point, but not yet. With cameras following people around.) At the moment only comprised of Flinch (who will have a relation to an old foe) and Ouija(who can see the future and tells three future events at a time. He is only ever correct on 2 of the 3, which creates problems in of itself)... the group will soon add a couple of new members.
And finally Omega team, which is basically the stay-at-home group. Ironically "lead" by James Hudson. He jokingly admits he chose the name of the group to deter enemies from using the naming convention to become the "anti-alpha". Also in the group is Heather, who mostly takes care of the baby, but is also a part time teacher in training leadership skills. Mostly to Louis and Adrian. Judd and Michael also double in this group as Trainer and Physician, respectively. Manbot is now their main computer/visual display (think batman's' bat-computer), used by Highbrow(hopefully with a name change). It's located in the main conference area where the team receives mission info.
Hudson tells the group that there are certain unsolved cases which need to be answered and will be the focus of this newest incarnation. He lists them as: finding out the true fate of former team mate Marina. Locating former mates Aurora(which is the only reason Northstar has taken a leave of absence from the Xmen), Madison Jeffries, Wild Child and Diamond lil. Proving the fate of Radius, seeing as how it's hard to believe one with a force field could die the way he did. The location of certain former employees Dept H with classified documents (and any other unresolved cases from former issues I'm not yet aware of).
*This is to tell readers that yes, all itching questions you once had will soon be solved and to give the team a sense of purpose, which was never really there before. People will stay interested and know that questioned WILL be answered.
Hudson then informs the groups of three separate "strange occurrences" which are happening in three different corners of the Country. One, on the east coast, where strange zombie-like sightings are being reported. Hudson sends Beta team to find out and stop whatever is causing this. Second, reports of strange monsters and animals becoming wild out in BC. He sends half of Alpha team, including Shaman, Snowbird, Sasquatch, Guardian and Puck 2. Finally, he sends Northstar, Judd and Earthmover to Nunavut to investigate strange "rumblings" in the earth.
*Now so far, this book seems to be covering a lot of characters, sort of like an Avengers Disassemble. But the main characters of the book are the originals. James is the main character. His thoughts are first and foremost. His enthusiasm and fears of the First Flight mission. There is certain info he must withhold and it eats him up inside. Heather is second. Her thoughts dwell on the safety of her child and questioning the humanity of her husband, a man she loves so much, after being "killed" so many times. She wonders, even as they lay in bed, how much humanity still exists in him. But she stays with him, which shows the strength of her character and unconditional love for her husband. I have cute moments between them in mind. Shaman has recently discovered he has bone cancer and is secretly undergoing treatments to delay the spread of the disease. He is constantly reminded of the death of his wife to the disease and the failure he still feels with his daughter. Puck is starting to notice his age and wear and tear on his body. His knees are bad and wonders how long he can keep up his career. His thoughts also dwell on his daughter, who hasn't forgiven him for not being there for her. Sasquatch and Snowbirds' adversity will be shown later.
Now, each group is arriving at their designated area. First, Beta team arrives in Moncton ;), they find it deserted. As they investigate, one of the team notices the Brass Bishop atop the NBTel Tower, throwing his hands in the air. Suddenly a large army of Zombie-like people turn the corner and head towards the group. Flex directs everyone to different positions while he attacks head on. His arms flex into large paddles, smacking the undead citizens aside, making his way to the tower. His newfound confidence is evident as he easily makes his way through, changing his hands to various weapons. He then uses one hand as a grappler and travels up one building while clinging to the side with a claw in the other hand then leaps and becomes more of a glider, flying and connecting with the tower. Quickly he starts up the building using his hands as spikes. Ghost simply becomes intangible and floats up with him. The rest of the team is handling the zombies easily. Murmur is clinging to the side of a building with her crossbow taking out anyone seen as a threat. Pathway opens a gate while Windshear blast a few people inside. All of a sudden a being who looks to be made of pure light pops out of nowhere, grabs Pathway and shoves her halfway into the gateway as it closes, killing her. Everybody is frozen in shock. Goblyn jumps at the murderer in rage. The being then open a gate, much like Laura just had and jumps through it and is gone. Already in mid air, Goblyn can't avoid the strike of the "partner" of the Bishop, that "head attached to a chain thing", strike her and send her flying into the air, become a small dot in the sky.
Meanwhile in BC, the larger of Alpha Team arrive to find two large beasts tearing down a forest. With a few suggestions from Sasquatch, the new Guardian and the rest of the team quickly defeats and contains the beasts, which dissolve into the ground. The animals in the area are still acting out of sorts and attack the team. Suddenly a young aboriginal girl appears out of the woods and raises her hand, which contains a small insignificant looking stick. The animals disperse. When the team goes to thank the young lady, Yukon Jack recognizes her as his "little sister", Naryariboo. Shaman reacts the familiarity of her name. She warns the group of a greater evil, which is among the team. She points her stick at snowbird and tells of a master of trickery has snuck his way onto the team. Snowbird denies the accusation, and is defended by Shaman. The girl then looks at Sasquatch and seems to know an awful lot of his past. She asks him, after his spirit was released from the robotic "container", where his essence ended up. He tells her, into the remains of his former teammate Snowbird. She then asks him how this team mate was rebirthed. He starts to tell her that her body rehealed itself, but catches himself in the contradiction. Everyone turns to Snowbird as an eerie smile comes across her face and her eyes glow red.
Up in the artic, Judd, Earthmover and Northstar arrive. A bit of witty bickering goes on between the "elf" and the "dwarf", reminiscing of their "counterparts" in Lord of the Rings. A lovable comradery is evident between them and will continue in the series. The shaking of the ground suddenly interrupts them. The large entity known as Tundra then appears over the horizon. Northstar goes in and flies around the beast, trying to disorientate the creature, to no avail. Puck then attempts to take out the creature's legs, but ends up reflecting of its seemingly indestructible ice outer shell. Earthmover then opens the shaman bag and attempts to use organic plant-like tendrils to contain him to the ground. Tundra tares threw them like paper. Chuck then asks Northstar to lift him to the top of the head of the creature. Once atop, earthmover then starts an incantation to stop the beast. Suddenly Tundra's' head becomes intangible and Chuck falls into it's head as the ice reforms on top of him.
Back in Moncton, outraged by what has transpired, Flex furiously climbs to the top of the tower. Noticing his impending danger, The Brass Bishop sends his chained partner to dislodge young Adrian. Hanging on with his left hand, Adrian flexes his right arm into a chainsaw and is successful at cutting through the chain. The head and collar then falls to the earth, next to Kara. The head dissolves into the ground much like the beasts did over in BC. The collar suddenly comes alive and attaches around the neck of Kara. Her eyes roll back, skin becomes a little more dull coloured and she gets an eerie smile across her face (again, not unlike snowbird in BC). The Chain re-attaches and Kara's body is hanging from it like a rag doll. Manikin, in shock and outrage, sends Proto and Apeman to attempt to break her free. She turns to Proto and with a word, sends it to its death. She then looks at the air born Apeman and simply says, "turn". His eyes glow purple and he also starts to smile. As Murmur keeps the zombies at bay, Manikin can only shout warnings to his teamate Flex. Apeman jumps and dislodges Adrian from the building. As he's falling, a set of arms reach out from the tower and catch the young leader. A head then pops out, Ghosts, and gives him a kiss on the cheek and aids him inside to the staircase. Windshear attempt to free Kara from the chain, and again, she looks him in the eye (or visor) and says, "turn".
Back in BC, Snowbird suddenly transforms into a large ugly beast. As the original members of the team seem paralysed in shock, Puck uses her irresistible force and connects with the beast from behind. With it's footing unstable, Guardian uses his blasts to subdue the beast, where it then too, dissolves into the ground. As the team is trying to figure out what has happened, Sasquatch notices a small "anime" looking "Eskimo" near the entrance of the woods. The little "Eskimo" is dressed in a simple, stereotypical parka, holding a stick with two fish attached to its end. No one else seems to be able to see the little man. Moving his hand to his mouth with a little giggle, the apparent Eskimo runs into the woods. Sasquatch then runs after the little man, not hearing the calls from his teamates behind him, questioning where he is going. Following the little man, Sasquatch sees him running straight through the inside of a large rock. Walter stops and carefully lifts the boulder to find not a man, but a piece of paper. Written on the paper, clearly for Walter, are the words "Your time is at it's end". Back at the clearing, Yukon Jack asks his "sister" what she is doing outside of the gates of Kemteron. She informs him of the passing of their father. Naryariboo tells her "brother" that their people are lost without their leader. Jack takes a deep breath. Though he was looking forward to the day where he would become leader of his people, he is unforeseen saddened by the passing of his father. Suddenly out of the smoke and ash of the recently defeated beast, which was Snowbird, a familiar laugh is heard and face appears. It is that of Loki.
Meanwhile, in Moncton, Flex reaches the top of the tower and plows through the roof doors. Jumping onto the metallic covered body of the Brass Bishop, Adrian's hands suddenly flex into a can opener and bottle opener. (He of course remembers his last encounter with the metal covered enemy. He knows that when the outershell is breached, Mephysto will appear and retake his soul). Apemen then jumps from the ledge, aiming for Flex. Ghost then appears out of thin air and makes the beast transparent. He then flies through the young Alphan without causing any damage. Ignoring the pounding the Bishop is giving him, Adrian fights through pain and continues to attempt to open the protective casing of his foe. He makes a breach at the same time as Windshear appears in the sky, aiming at Adrian. A portal then opens between them, containing the face of Mephysto, calling the Bishop "home". Behind him another Gateway opens containing the being of light from before. Bishop decides to jump through this one instead, followed by Windshear, Apeman and finally Kara attached to the chain. Mephysto looks cheated as his portal closes. Flex is left, falling to his knees. He is filled with grief knowing he is left with less then half the team he started with as the remaining Zombie bodies fall to rest. Not a good first day for the interim leader of the newly formed Beta Team.
Back in BC, Loki notes that his trick was discovered prematurely by an unforeseen variable. He explains that this was his biggest planned trick against the Canadian Heroes. This was to be his grandest payback to the team that thwarted him in the past. He says, with the recent events in Asgard, he has no time to finish his plan. As his image starts to fade, he leaves one final discouraging message. He says that "somehow", the Great Beasts are now under the impression that the Alpha Team tends to enter their realm and interrupt their interests and are now very motivated to eliminate this new team.
Shaman, now very interested in this new young girl asks how she knew of this new "Snowbird's real identity. She states that she knows because, she is the real spirit of Narya. She was sent back to earth as a baby a couple years back. Shaman didn't detect her descension because it was hidden by Loki. As a baby she appeared alone and was later found by Makkamakkamaktsptoo. He raised her as Jack's "sister" having aged rapidly in the few years. She fully remembers her former experiences as Narya, but reminds Shaman that she is not the same "person" since she has been reborn and feels no attachment to her former life. Only that of protecting the North. She is then interrupted by Lou, Guardian. The whole time he has been looking away with one hand in front of his eyes. He asks the scantily clad young woman if she'd mind wearing his jacket. She declines. He asks her if she'd then consider holding a piece of material in front of her to cover her. At the same time, he pulls from his side and tears a piece of material off his white jacket, amazingly enough in the shape of a maple leaf! lol He's left with a maple leaf shaped whole, now showing the red suit underneath in the familiar shape. Now looking more and more like "Guardian". He passes her the white material. She holds it in front of her, similarly to the "naked states" which hide their private parts covered by leaves. The team then gets an urgent message from Judd, stating that they are in over their heads with the new Tundra. Rejoined by Sasquatch, the two other teams start on to join their troubled teamates in Nunavut.
Once the surviving team members arrive at the scene, they struggle to find a plan of attack that works against the behemoth. Shaman then sees his medicine pouch, dropped by the missing Earthmover. He tried himself to take down the beast, but again, fails. When the monster nearly makes his way to a populated area, the team starts to lose hope. All of a sudden, riding on the back of one of a heard of Caribou, young Narya arrives, waiving her little stick in the air. She then calls for Shaman's pouch. He then tosses it to her, thinking since she is sent down from the gods; she must know what she is doing. She then rips the pouch in two. Streaks of light flash from the now two pieces of material, but then fade. She jumps from her animal friend onto the back of the great beast. She quickly climbs a top the monster and stands on his head, right where Moss was standing. She ties the two pieces of cloth around her hand and stick, attaching the small piece of wood to her hand. She raises it into the windy air and a strange green glow appears around her hand.
Suddenly in another dimension, populated by large beasts, a small hand and stick appears in the sky. Below it, a large portal grows. Attracted by the scene is a large Armadillo-like creature. It then passes thought the portal.
Back in Nunavut, before a small village of Inuit, the ground trembles and from it's frozen crust; the same large armadillo-like creature appears. Narya gives it a name (I'm not good with names) tells it to attack the Tundra creature. She then jumps off the beast and is caught, by both hands, by two White snow owls, which carry her to safely on the ground. The armidillo like creature then rams it's head into Tundra, after a short battle, crumbling the creature. Shaman is astounded by the power of the young woman. In describing her power, he comes up with the name "Summon", which young Narya will now carry.
Looking onto the scene, from a cave, a silhouette of a familiar shape (looks like the Master), pears through a portal at the group of heroes looking very interested. (I know, it sounds cheesy and cliché but things aren't what they appear). The silhouette figure then turns to see the new group of baddies: Brass Bishop + Kara, Apeman and Windshear, all standing in a line. In the background are two cages, one contains Chuck Moss, and the other you can't see.
Back at the Alpha Flight building, Shaman and Summon are finishing a discussion. She repeats the fact that she carries no attachment of her former life and the only reason she has joined the team is because they protect the north. Shaman invites her to stay in the building but she declines. She'd prefer to sleep outside. Outside the building, inside her little "fort", Narya sits with a blanket in front of her, containing a few small objects which mean something to her, including her little stick (there's a story behind that stick). She then wraps up the blanket and lays down. She goes to grab something next to her. She then holds it next to her heart and a tear drips out of her eye. We zoom in. It turns out to be a small frame with a picture of Doug Thompson holding his baby.
