Wait, is nine thousand a lot? How many vampires are there supposed to be? I mean, if they are immortal and keep biting new people, shouldn't there be a heck of a lot of them?
According to Marvel, soon to be zero.A better question might be 'what is the human population of the bay area?'

Ok according to the website census.gov, the Bay Area [human] population is 7.4 million people. In issue 1 there was a terrorist attack that spread a vampire virus so I find the 9000 number to be rather plausible.
If most of the "vampires" they are detecting, are merely people infected with this new genetically-engineered vampire virus they mentioned, then that makes a bit more sense...But the infected people aren't really vampires, just vampire-thralls (in the process of change)...To kill them would be murder, without seeking an alternate course for dealing with them (I dunno, like maybe finding a cure for the virus?). True vampires are infected/turned by their attackers, they then must die (due to blood loss , etc...), after three nights of being just a corpse they rise from the dead as a vampire (there is no hope for them to become human again, without extreme magical and medical means). The whole time of their being infected before death is the only time they can be "easily" saved....And that usually means destroying the vampire that began their change (wooden stake through the heart, then lopping off the head, then burning and so on).
How long have the X-Men been aware that vampire activity is going on in the city and why the heck did they wait around until it got to this point to do anything?
How is Xarus controlling all the vampires, coordinating them (keeping in contact with them) or even keeping them from coming after him to usurp his so-called leadership? Dracula drank the blood of the oldest and most powerful vampire in history (Varnae) to become lord of all vampires. With that blood, Dracula was/is able to exert control over all vampires (depending on the vampires' individual strength of will) even over thousands of miles of distance. Xarus did not do the same...How is he keeping them all in line?
This story has so many holes, it's starting to look like a screen door.

I doubt every vampire in the world is attending the vamp-fest in San Fran, though. One: There is no way to manage such a gathering, since Xarus is not a true Lord of Vampires (as Dracula was...See my above post). Xarus in no way, shape or form is able to control the entire world's population of undead.
Two: Nine thousand, may indeed be a good population number for vampires world-wide, but keep in mind...Not all vampires create new vampires with every feeding. Many vampires take only as much blood as they need (which doesn't always kill the victim), while others ensure the victim will not come back as one of the undead by killing the victim first or during feeding (by neck-snapping, decapitation, etc...). I can't imagine the world's population of vampires would range in the millions either, especially after events such as their recent battle in Captain Britain and the past event of the reading of the Montesi formula by Dr Strange (which destroyed every vampire on the planet). Also, you have to take into account the armies of vampire-hunters that exist in almost every country in the world (including Blade, who's probably killed thousands of vampires in his lifetime).
I feel the number is necessarily inflated for dramatic purposes (and not done very well)...One thousand vampires or even eight hundred would be sufficiently menacing.

Whew! Thanks so much for the explanation! Man you sure know your vampire info - and thanks for mentioning Dr. Strange's extermination of the vampires, one of my favorite Dr. Strange stories BTW.

There's a joke of some sort waiting to come out in that phrase somewhere...the vamp-fest in San Fran

Dana - Your knowledge of vampirism is...um...impressive? or maybe alarming? Suffice it to say I am glad you are all the way up in Maine because to have such an intimate knowledge of the undead could either stem from experience dealing with them or dare I say it - actually being connected in some way...
