I have to wonder from time-to-time, why did they even bother with the de-powering of most of the mutants? Many have got new powers, regained their original powers or the de-powered list has been ignored.

I know part of their reason was to cut down the mutant population, but that hasn't stopped some writers of the X-books from creating a host of new mutant characters (that skirts the de-powering angle in some way).
